Granville Island

Sorry I haven't posted all week. I worked five days in a row, and the weather was so amazing, I was outside all my spare time.
AS ALWAYS, FOR BEST DETAIL...CLICK EM TO BIG EM
My last post about English Bay was only part of that days excursion. We also went to Granville Island that day. Located between the Burrard and Granville street Bridges. It is formerly an industrial area which has been converted into a trendy shopping and artsy area. There are still some industrial businesses still operating here. The Granville Island Cement Works, with its brightly coloured cement trucks, and a boat yard, bustling with sailboats in dry dock, getting their hulls sanded free of barnacles and acquiring fresh coats of paint.

Old warehouses have been transformed into a Public Market, A micro Brewery, Boat sales, and other really nice shops, featuring crafts, art supply, clothing, tourist souvenirs, garden gear, florists, etc. Also a wealth of small theaters and restaurants. There is ongoing free entertainment, featuring some very talented street performers who draw huge audiences with their antics. The Public Market is so bright and noisy. Filled with fresh produce, seafood and baking.

Some of the architectural details are obvious reminders of the islands industrial past. I wonder how many shoppers ever look up into the rafters to notice this huge hook and chain hanging above the fresh veggies! The corrugated steel siding on most of the buildings is another industrial feature. I love this bright red window frame.

There is an abundance of outdoor seating all about the island. With so many gorgeous views of the water and surrounding city and mountains, it is hard to pick just one spot to sit. We sat for a while over looking the Granville Street bridge. It was the sail past of the False Creek Yacht Club. A lot of fancy boats were being paraded out past the commandants ship for his perusal. Mid, a close up of him and his boarded guests showed more of an interest in the beverages and gossip than the passing fleet!

Ill post more photos from here later. There were so many interesting photo ops, I can't fit them all into one post!

I loved the pictures. I felt as if I was there - they are so clear and crisp. I love having my camera with me too. I'm an addict, when it comes to that.
Anyway, I really enjoyed your blog.

Me too.... I had no inspiration nor time to post one single character on my blog. My brain is on hold this week.:-)
I have plans to make another series of photos, but it has to wait till Wednesday. You have made interesting photos of the Granville Bridges. This type of bridge make me think of the HefBrug (Lift Bridge)in Rotterdam.

That bridge has been replaced by a modern bridge the "Erasmusbrug", nickname "The Swan".

Google:
"Rotterdam hef sept 2003.jpg" and
"Erasmusbrug" or go to

That's going to be my next foray into the city. Haven't been down there for ages, but would love to walk along the seawall there and watch the boats. Bridges is a great place for lunch, too.

I love Granville Island. I can actually walk there from here (on a nice day, which we aren't having today...). I love all the wonderful craft stalls, and I always end up buying a scarf or a pair of earrings, hand-crafted by a local artisan.

What a great post and fabulous photos.

Cheers,
Josie

Hi ya'll.... Great pics as always Susan.

By the way, we have been down to the Ranch every Wednesday for the last two months until at least 10 p.m. But I know you two are so busy lately. However, we are going down this Friday for a late dinner and then waiting for Phil to show up for singing. I keep telling Shannon about you guys and we keep hoping you'll show up someday soon.

Big hugs.

You are a wonderful photographer. I just visited your other site, also. Your pictures are beautiful. I must stop procrastinating and add you to my blogroll, so I remember to drop by on a regular basis.

I love going to Granville island on a nice day. Alicia and I can hang out all day enjoying musicians entertaining outside the market over a frappuccino (sp?) and a snack, shopping, and browsing. It's great if you want fresh fish for dinner or just bags of fresh produce. We do live in a beautiful place, don't we.
