To Market, To Market

We recently had a trip to Granville Island Market in Vancouver.
I love the crowds, the sights and smells. What a wonderful atmosphere to be surrounded by! But, it's not a good idea to take a vegitarian child to the market with you, as we discovered. Already limited to nuts, legumes and seafood as protien sources. After this shopping excursion, we have now even less options for the dinner menu. She always loved seafood, one of her favorites was prawns. At Grandville Island she saw these little guys and asked what they were.

Now, realizing that one of her favorite foods started out with bulgy eyes and feelers, she will no longer partake in prawns! As we strolled about the island, we passed the pond and noticed it was alive with turtles. I suggested that we could catch a couple of the big ones fairly easily and boil them up for dinner. She informed me that the only turtles she would eat were made of chocolate with caramel and peacans inside. So much for that!
The candy apples looked tasty and so did the fudge. But no chocolate turtles to be seen. This fellow was busy stiring his confection to perfection.
It reminded me of the scene in the sweet factory out of Chitty Bang Bang! But I was the only one singing "Toot Sweet, Toot Sweet!" as Heidi elbowed me, her usual signal that I am embarrassing her. Believe me, it doesnt take much. She hates it when I sing in public. Well , lots of other people sing down on Granville Island. The only difference is, they have a busking license and I dont.

The fresh fruit stalls here are so colourful and smell heavenly. The fruit is displayed so artistically. The prices are outrageous though. I think Ill wait on the fresh Okanagen fruit as my folks are coming out from there on the weekend and usually load us up with fruit from the neighboring orchards.

Susan, isn't Granville Island just the best?? I haven't been down there for a while, but believe it or not, I can actually walk there. After seeing the photographs, I know where I'm going this weekend. And I'm going to get some fudge :-)

Cheers,
Josie

Haven't been down there in ages, but isn't it fun!! And I love to go for lunch at Beaches and sit out on the wharf. They have the best smoked salmon pizza (or did have the last time I was there). It's also fun to take the water taxi across to the other side and back. Wait up, Josie!
