Daisy Chain of Events.

This post will make a change from all the snowy pictures I have been uploading of late. A little glimpse into the progression of one of my photoshoots. It was in the summer of 2003 that I took these photos. Using the old Kodak digital, that was one of the first digitals on the market. I had inherited it from my dad when he upscaled to a newer model.
I was home alone on a partly cloudy summer day in early July. I wanted some photos of my Shasta Daisies which were at their peak.
First a few shots of the mound of flowers.
Then a close up or two.

Then I got the idea to pick one and hold it over the pool to contrast the gleaming white petals with the brilliant blue of the pool.

Next, I put the flower closer to the surface of the water. I like how the sun is glinting off the water in this one.

Then I broke off the stem and floated the daisy on the surface of the water. Here it makes ripples as it settles in. I like how the droplettes are sitting on the petals. The pattern on the bottom of the pool makes for an interesting background.

This is the familiar photo that you will see in my profile and next to my comments. The water had stilled and the daisy appears to be floating on air. I have had people ask me how I achieved the 3D effect. Most folks didnt realize that it was floating on water. I call this shot Oopsiedaisy.
I am sure my neighbours must think I am crazy. They see me in all sorts of compromizing positions. Crawling on my belly around the pool for one. !!!

You may be surprised to know that I still have the receipt for that camera, it was a One MP Kodak DC215 and was purchased at Blacks Cameras, Guildford Town Centre Mall, Surrey BC December 16, 1999 and was a Christmas Gift from my father who at that time had less than 2 years to live.
Cost was 539.99 plus tax The camera came with a 4mb memory card, I bought a 40mb card for another 150.00 plus tax and rechargeable batteries and charger that I think cost about 65.00.
This one megapixel camera was a high end camera at that time and I remember very few people had digital at that time. It produced very nice pics as long as you didn’t enlarge them, then you could see that 1mp was a little short on pixels.

I am now on my third digital camera having upgraded to a DSLR cam. Back in ’99 a DSLR would have been $6000.00. I have just bought my wife a Kodak 4mp camera for 99bucks. Image quality went up and price down…. amazing

That was very creative of you. They are nice pics.

I love daisies though, they are one of my favorite flowers, I think they are beautiful in their simplicity.

You are doing a very good job with your photography. Are you still using that camera? You said on my blog that you have ben thinking of buying a new one. Buying locally probably means spending a few dollars more but the help available may well be worth the extra cost. Digital SLRs have come down a lot in price. Nikon now has from their D40 at about $600 US all the way up to their D2X at something close to $5000. I am partial to Nikon but there are other good ones, too, especially if you have a selection of lenses from a film camera that might fit.

The photo of the daisy floating with ripples around it is amazing! You are such a great photographer and see the beauty in what I always thought of as 'those nasty, stinky daisy's'. You've changed my perspective!
