Mid Week In My Town.

Maple Ridge has produced its fair share of big names over the years. Athetes, writers and others who became pillars of this community. A few years ago, the Community Hall of Fame was established.

This is the Halls mandate.
The people of Maple Ridge & Pitt Meadows honour and pay tribute to exceptional citizens involved in Sports, the Arts, Business, Education, and Community Organizations:
For their outstanding achievements bringing honour or recognition Provincially, Nationally or Internationally to our two Communitiesand/orFor contributing over a significant number of years in many aspects of civic life to building a better Community.

Go to this link, to see more.

Click on the subjects picture to get more information.

You may recognize some of the faces and names. Some are more locally known. Many of these names have ingrained themselves in our community. Schools named for them, Streets and parks too. Some of the long time local businesses continue to bear the names of our towns founding members.

So, do you recognize anyone?
Is there any well known person that has roots from your town?

Jesus is from my town. Well, the actor who played him in the recent Mel Gibson movie, "The Pasion of the Christ" is from Mt. Vernon. He went through the local & parochail school system. I see his Dad often at the Starbucks where I am almost a daily fixture. I know there are others but I am a fairly recent new-commer of a little less than 3 years so don't know all of them yet.

One of the players on the Carolina Hurricanes, Andrew Ladd, is from Maple Ridge. If the 'Canes win the Cup, that means it will be coming to our town...yay! Of course, I'm rooting for the Oilers though.

Have a good day on this cloudy Thursday! **hugs**

Not exactly from my home town, but nearby neighborhoods. Jack Palance grew up near my home town, in the same town my hubby grew up in, and still has a home located near there.

Another town near to where I grew up is named after the late Jim Thorpe.
James Francis Thorpe accomplished arguably what no other athlete in history has. The Sac and Fox Indian won gold medals in the pentathlon and decathlon in the 1912 Olympic games in Sweden and played both professional football and professional baseball. His feats on the football field put him on the 1911 and 1912 All-American football teams. In 1920 he became the first president of the American Professional Football Association (later to become the NFL)

He was quite an accomplished athlete. :)

Have a great weekend.
